It seems, having the ideal body weight is the dream of almost everyone. But alas, losing weight is not as easy as turning the palm of the hand. Lots of diet stories that fail. But have you ever heard of the Ayurveda diet? Maybe this diet is one alternative that you can try.
I tried dieting, but I still haven’t lost weight. Indeed there are several things that cause diets to fail, including the wrong way of dieting, inappropriate diets, too much cheating, lack of exercise, and so forth.
The Ayurveda diet is a diet based on the principle of Ayurveda which has a focus on balancing energy in the body and mind. Unlike other types of diets, this diet, which has been known for thousands of years, not only aims to nourish your body, but also your mind.
In addition, by choosing certain types of food for each type of body shape that is different, this diet also offers a more personalized diet system for everyone.
Similar to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda also adheres to the existence of 5 elements such as air, water, space, fire, and earth. Then, the Ayurveda diet will also be determined by the type of body or energy (dosha) you have.
Foods that are consumed and avoided
Dosha itself is often referred to as the mind body type, which is then divided into 3 types, namely:
Dosha pitta (a combination of fire and water)
People who are smart, hardworking, and decisive in making decisions. However, those who have moderate body shape are generally prone to digestive problems, heart problems, and high blood pressure.
Dosha vata (combined air and space)
People who are creative, energetic, and have a thin body shape. Usually, they are prone to digestive problems, fatigue, and excessive anxiety.
Dosha kapha (combination of soil and water)
People who are calm and loyal. They have a larger body shape and often have problems with weight, asthma, depression, and diabetes.
After dividing as above, the Ayurveda diet will recommend eating certain foods based on your dosha type. For example, dosha pitta is recommended to eat foods such as poultry meat, egg whites, tofu, milk, oranges, pears, pineapple, bananas, melons, mangoes, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, zucchini, green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, carrots, and pumpkin.
Then, if you have dosha vatta, it is recommended to eat foods such as poultry, seafood, tofu, milk, yogurt, cheese, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, mangoes, sweet potatoes, beets, turnips, carrots, and kidney beans, and limit consumption of dried fruit and raw vegetables.
While in dosha kapha, it is recommended to consume poultry meat, seafood, egg whites, bean milk, goat’s milk, apples, blueberries, pears, cherries, potatoes, and mushrooms, and limit consumption of nuts, seeds, and oils.
In addition, the three dosha must also limit consumption of red meat, artificial sweeteners, and processed foods. On the other hand, all dosha are advised to eat whole foods that have a little processing such as fruits and vegetables.
The positive and negative sides of the Ayurveda diet
It is well known that consuming food through processing and artificial additives can indeed increase the risk of various diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke and cancer. In addition, this diet can also help you lose weight because of the food restrictions that it applies.
However, the Ayurveda diet is also subjective, especially in determining what dosha you have. This will certainly have an impact on the types of food that you should consume and avoid.
In addition, the many restrictions on food that are applied can lead to confusion and difficulty in preparing the food you will consume.
So far, there is not much scientific evidence that can support the basic theory of the Ayurveda diet. Therefore, nutrition specialist doctors still adhere to the recommendation of a complete and balanced nutritional diet in accordance with the guidelines “food pyramid” and “contents of my plate” issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Health.
